The Problem of Fruit

This is something I thought of one day when I was in deep thought. I often look at the complexity that is life on Earth. How complex our circulatory systems are, the appearance of fractals in nature, the interdependence of everything in the ecosystem. I used to ponder whether all of this was just by chance or if there was a strict and perfect force that guides all this stuff. My thinking came to a beautiful question.

Why are fruit? The idea behind fruit is that an animal will eat the fruit, spit the seed out and a new tree would grow. But in order for the fruit to be created, wouldn’t the tree need to know that there are animals out there who will eat these fruit? The animal presence had to be considered on some level, by some form of consciousness for the creation of fruit to have taken place. Moreover, the plant also knew what the animal would need nutritionally so that it would be worth eating. The same goes for spores. How does a fungus or flower know that there is this thing called “wind” that will carry these spores to a place to spawn more life?

I think its a great question with a simple answer if you understand evolution. Regardless its question that gives a little more beauty to the world that can seem so drab and ugly.  The fact that evolution keeps us on a track of preservation can serve as a great metaphor for living your life.  Continue to evolve and you will be sustained.
